Automotive EMC, 5G Wireless, Calibration, and Live Time Domain Measurements Demo to be Presented at Leading IEEE Symposium
CEDAR PARK, Texas, July 8, 2020 - ETS-Lindgren announced its technical contributions to the 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Signal/Power Integrity (SIPI). The Symposium will be held virtually from July 28 - August 28, with content available on-demand through September 30. The contributions include several presentations and five tutorials on a wide variety of topics as well as a hardware demonstration. ETS-Lindgren's technical contributions begin on July 29, 2020. Zhong Chen, Director of RF Engineering with ETS-Lindgren, is an invited speaker in the prestigious Clayton R. Paul Global University scheduled for July 28 - 30. Mr. Chen will share his expertise on the topic of "Antennas" in an extended two-hour presentation on Wednesday, July 29, from 8:00 - 10:00 am CDT. The Symposium tutorials organized by ETS-Lindgren begin on Tuesday morning, August 11, at 8:45 am CDT. ETS-Lindgren's Ross Carlton, EMC Systems Integration Engineer, will co-chair the tutorial "EMC Testing Basics – Part 1 of 2." Speakers from TÜV Rheinland, De Montfort University, and National Instruments will complement Mr. Carlton's presentation on "EMC Test Planning." Jack McFadden, EMC Systems Engineer with ETS-Lindgren, will also present "EMC Lab Automation for Efficiency and Quality" as part of this tutorial. The morning tutorial concludes at 12:00 pm CDT.
On Wednesday, August 12, "EMC Testing Basics – Part 2 of 2" is scheduled from 8:45 am - 12:00 pm CDT. Customer Relationship Manager Janet O'Neil will co-chair this tutorial featuring speakers from Underwriters Laboratories, Hoolihan EMC Consulting, JDM Labs, and Clemson University/LearnEMC. Doug Kramer, Director for Lab Services with ETS-Lindgren, will present "Calibration of EMC Test Equipment." "This new EMC Testing Basics tutorial was suggested by my colleague Ross Carlton," said Ms. O'Neil. "With his background as chair of the IEEE Standards Development and Education Committee (SDECom), Ross realized many people would appreciate learning how to get started with EMC testing from a practical, real-world point of view. Once he decided to cover the essential topics, we realized we needed a two-part tutorial to do the topic justice. We have a great team of speakers to educate practitioners on the basics of EMC testing."
Mr. Chen and Ms. O'Neil will co-chair the tutorial "EMC Antenna Characterizations and Applications" on Tuesday, August 18, from 8:45 am – 12:00 pm CDT. Mr. Chen will also present along with speakers from ANSYS and Boeing, giving a presentation titled "Time Domain Techniques to Remove Close-By Objects for Antenna Calibrations."
On Wednesday, August 19, from 8:45 am - 12:00 pm CDT, Ms. O'Neil and Jari Vikstedt, ETS-Lindgren's Director for Wireless Solutions, will co-chair the tutorial "5G New Radio and mmWave Devices: Test Challenges and Solutions."
Mr. Vikstedt will present "Performance Evaluation of the 5G FR2 mmWave Handsets: From Vision to Reality." And ETS-Lindgren's James Young, Director of Business Development, will present "FCC Emissions Tests on 5G Devices." Rounding out the speaker list are presenters from MITRE and Hoolihan EMC Consulting, the latter delivering the Technical Interest Statement "Health and Safety Issues Concerning Exposure of the General Public to Electromagnetic Energy from 5G Wireless Communication Networks," recently published by the IEEE Committee on Man and Radiation (COMAR).
To conclude the series of ETS-Lindgren-organized tutorials on Thursday, August 20, from 8:45 am - 12:00 pm CDT, ETS-Lindgren's Garth D'Abreu, Director of Automotive Solutions will once again co-chair the popular "Recent Advancements in Automotive EMC Technology" with Robert Kado of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Speakers from ETS-Lindgren, Tesla, Rohde & Schwarz, and Clemson University/LearnEMC will address the complex EMC and wireless environments affecting modern "connected" vehicles that are equipped with degrees of autonomous driving capabilities and increasingly sophisticated state-of-the-art infotainment features. Mr. D'Abreu will present "Novel EMC Test Methods for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems." Anoop Adhyapak, RF Engineer with ETS-Lindgren will conclude the tutorial with his presentation "Chamber Design Considerations for EMC and Antenna Pattern Measurements of Full Vehicles."
Note these tutorials will be presented in a simulive format hosted by the IEEE. Speakers will present their slides followed by a live Q&A session moderated by the session co-chairs. New this year, given the virtual Symposium format, Mr. Adhyapak and Mr. Chen will present in a video of the hardware demonstration "Debugging a Failed EMC Chamber above 1 GHz Using Time Domain Measurements." Mr. Chen, ANSI C63 Subcommittee 1 Chair, advised, "If an anechoic chamber fails a performance validation test above 1 GHz using the sVSWR method specified in CISPR 16, it is very difficult to identify the root cause of the failure. However, when using the time domain measurement technique as described in ANSI C63.25.1-2019, debugging a chamber is much easier, faster, accurate, and reliable." Their demonstration video shows how to utilize these techniques in a real-world environment using a three-meter semi-anechoic chamber. This demonstration is scheduled for Monday, August 24, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm CDT. It will be available for on-demand viewing following the Symposium through September 30.
ETS-Lindgren also contributed two papers to the technical program, including "Multi-Physics Analysis of Polystyrene Based RF Absorbers" by Mr. Adhyapak and Mr. Chen as well as "Evaluation of Site Validation Methods for an EMC Chamber from 18 GHz to 40 GHz" by Mr. Adhyapak. These papers document the considerable R&D that has resulted in industry leading EMC and anechoic chamber test environments.
