In addition to having the same design challenges as other electronic devices, medical devices must adhere to stricter standards when it comes to wireless compatibility, EMC emissions, and electrical safety.

Wireless Compatibility – As more medical devices become wireless, the coexistence of devices will become more important to maintain quality of service and security. The FDA has developed this guidance document for reference.


EMC Emissions – Medical devices have their specific emissions standard which is outlined in the IEC/ 60601-1-2, 4th edition. CSA outlines the changes from the 3rd edition in this white paper.


Electrical Safety – Medical devices must adhere to the electrical safety section of the IEC 60601-1 standard. These are in addition to the individual country’s electrical safety standards. Ie. In Canada, the Electrical Safety Authority maintains a list of companies that can certify products in Ontario.
